Renewing our commitment towards Safety

On 21 February 2024, I-FIM hosted its annual Safety & Health Day with a resounding success with 60 enthusiastic participants from different PI groups! We held a fun and informative safety event for our staff and students, who enjoyed various games and activities related to safety topics with the aim of raising awareness and promoting a culture of safety in our workplace.

Games and Activities

The event featured several games stations, where participants could test their knowledge and skills on different aspects of safety. Some of the games included:

  • Hazard identification: Participants scoured various scenarios to spot potential hazards in a simulated work environment.
  • Safety slogan scramble: Teamwork was put to the test as participants unscramble words to form catchy and memorable safety slogans.
  • Sharing of safety stories: Participants shared their personal experiences or stories related to safety, and discuss the lessons learned and best practices. This exercise highlighted the real-world impact of safety practices.
  • Safety theme charade: Laughter filled the room as teams acted out safety-related tools and themes, promoting camaraderie and reinforcing key safety tools that they have in the laboratories.
  • Swiss cheese model: Participants had to learn about the concept of the Swiss cheese model, which illustrates how errors can occur when multiple layers of defence fail, and apply it to real-life scenarios.
  • Pyramid games: Participants had to guess safety-related words or phrases based on clues given by their teammates to reinforce safety terminology and language.

CPR and AED Training

Another highlight of the event was the CPR and AED training session, where participants learned how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in case of a cardiac arrest. The session was conducted by a certified instructor, who demonstrated the steps and techniques of CPR and AED, and supervised the participants as they practiced on mannequins. The session was very informative and interactive, and participants gained valuable skills that could save lives.
