Light Years, Week Days

Light Years, Week Days
, a site-specific installation that explores the movement of chimes and their unsystematic tinkling. Inspired by the Roman philosopher Pliny’s hypothesis that the constant movement of the air, earth, and planets creates a sweet harmonious music, the timing of the chimes’ tinkling can be indirectly controlled by selecting the pendulum’s length and the distance between them. The original music pieces created are then played by the random wind blasts in the tunnel.

Presented by the NUS Arts Festival (NAF) 2023, Light Years, Week Days is a collaborative project between visual artist Kate Daudy and Prof Kostya Novoselov, director of the Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials. The art installation, curated by Karen Lim from the NUS Museum and the NUS Public Art Initiative, features interventions by students from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music’s Sonic Circuit and Live Interactivity modules, guided by Dr Chow Jun Yan and supported by the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum.

This interdisciplinary project creates a unique learning opportunity for students to explore the intersections of art, music, science, and engineering, and experiment with creative music innovation by interacting with the artwork. Composer Chow Jun Yan has also created two modules inspired by the installation, making Light Years, Week Days the perfect platform for interdisciplinary learning.

Notably, the installation features contributions from I-FIM students, including Sergey Grebenchuk and Mikhail Kravtsov.
