Our Facility

The Institute for Functional Intelligent Materials (I-FIM) is the world’s first institute dedicated to the design, synthesis, and application of Functional Intelligent Materials (FIMs) was officially launched on 7 October 2021 by the Minister for Education Mr. Chan Chun Seng.

Hosted at the National University of Singapore, I-FIM is the sixth research centre of excellence (RCE) in Singapore, and the fourth RCE hosted at NUS.

Optical labs

Our state-of-the-art optics labs harness the power of spectroscopy and microscopy to delve into a diverse range of heterostructures and layered materials. Optical spectroscopy serves as a cornerstone technique, facilitating detailed investigations into the properties and behaviors of these materials.

1

Spectroscopy Measurements

Our spectroscopy measurements involve the precise manipulation of laser excitation on research samples, coupled with the detection of their emission/absorption spectra. This process is meticulously executed using high-resolution, low-noise spectrometers and advanced cameras. By varying the excitation energy, we can map out the intricate spectral signatures of the materials under study.

2

Microscopic Analysis

To achieve unparalleled precision, we employ piezoelectric positioners capable of manipulating the incident laser excitation to different spots on microscopic samples with nanometer-range accuracy. This enables us to obtain comprehensive spectral maps, offering valuable insights into the structural and optical properties of the materials.

3

Experimental Setups

Our optical measurement setups are designed to accommodate varying experimental conditions. We offer both room temperature apparatus for ambient characterization and low-temperature configurations that provide additional measurement capabilities, including precise control over temperature and magnetic fields. These setups empower researchers to explore materials across a broad range of environmental conditions, unlocking new insights and possibilities.
